According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), more than 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery. Although modern slavery is not defined in law, it is used as an umbrella term covering practices such as forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage, and human trafficking. Maybe ILO forgot to mention the slavery to machines, internet and social media. But the true question is, is social media addiction, captor or simply the need of the hour? Considering the modern scenario, social mediums are platforms for building connections, promoting business/products and making the world a smaller place. Like any other scientific discovery, social media has its plus and minus. Social media is for us to use diligently and not to make us its slaves. Slavery is bad and calling one social media’s slave would be unfair as the use it of it is a necessity in today’s age but ruthlessly exploiting it is dangerous and that practise needs to be amended. In conclusion, one can say that carefully treading on social media is angelic, but rushing into an addiction like social media is a fool’s choice.
